Volume Loss

Volume Loss

Facial volume loss is caused partly by the breakdown of proteins such as collagen that provide structure to your skin. This change occurs as we age. Our youthful balance of fat changes – we lose it in some areas and gain it in others. Inherited genes appear to intensify the process.

The most common areas of volume loss are below the eyes (tear troughs), temples, cheeks, and lips.

SIGNS OF FACIAL VOLUME LOSS

  • Wrinkles
  • Lines on the lips and around the nose
  • Hollowing around the eye sockets or visible tear troughs
  • Flattened and sagging cheeks
  • Loose skin around the jawline (jowls)
  • Thinner lips, with less definition
  • Drier, thinner-looking skin with less elasticity
  • Emphasized bone at the brows, giving a more skeletal appearance
  • Folds: from the corners of the nose to the mouth (nasolabial) and/or beneath the corners of the mouth (oral commissures)
  • Squarer-looking face
  • Sagging skin that creates a wrinkle appearing to be a second chin
  • Older appearance

TREATMENTS
For mild to moderate volume loss, dermal fillers are an excellent solution. If volume loss is coupled with skin laxity, in-office procedures can also be performed to tighten the skin and encourage the production of collagen and elastin.
